PGA Championship Power Rankings: Top 10 picks for Bellerive
Justin Thomas finished T28 last year at the WGC-Bridgestone before going on to win the PGA Championship the next week. Imagine what he can do after his warm-up is a win?
Of course, golf isn’t anywhere near that predictable. There’s still something to be said for Thomas bouncing back to form last week, though.
The win in Ohio now bookends two wins early this 2017-18 season at the CJ Cup and Honda Classic. Some were a little worried he only had one top-10 since March, but A) he didn’t play many events and B) He’s still missed just two cuts all year, compared to the six he had at this same point in 2017.
Thomas hit three out of every four greens last week at Firestone and is seventh on Tour in strokes gained on approaches.
"“I’m just in a great place mentally right now, I just was so patient and calm all week,” Thomas said. “I mean, I think I made six bogeys all week, something like that, which is pretty good around this place as many birdies as I feel like I make.”"
When he’s finding fairways, Thomas is dialed in. The 25-year-old is first in fairway accuracy. He’s having a decent putting year, but statistically his best putting days are Sundays.
If Thomas has a putt inside 20 feet to win the Wanamaker Trophy, I see him knocking it in to become the first back-to-back PGA champion since Tiger Woods (2006-07).
