It’s gut-check time as the Wyndham Championship offers the last chance at FedEx Cup playoff positioning

It’s the Wyndham Championship week, a tournament not for those short in attention span.

Let me explain.

A lot of substories litter this event that won’t move the needle for the casual golf fan who got their fix last week at the PGA, but there’s enough meat on the bone to keep this an outstanding season finale.

Granted, a lot of the top players who are well-positioned for the FedEx Cup Playoffs are resting. It’s too bad, but who can blame them when four events in five weeks (and the Ryder Cup for some) are upcoming?

The most interesting stories this week will come from the 125 bubble. Not only does a spot in the top 125 get you into the FedEx Cup playoffs, but it all but cinches member status for 2018-19.

Those that miss out are resigned to the Web.com Tour playoffs and weeks of uncertainty.

It can get nauseating to try to do all the number-crunching to see who’s in or out, but late on a Sunday when things begin to crystallize, this event becomes the closest thing we’ve got to the old Q School format.

There’s the actual tournament at hand, but there’s also the tournament within the tournament for those whose livelihood is at stake.

A $100,000 payday to a bubble player is going to mean infinitely more than if Sergio or Stenson took the title and 10 times as much cash.

Plus, a player high up the top 125 can cinch a spot in the Tour Championship, or at the least the BMW Championship, with a win this week. It’s all about positioning.

Anyway, we’re back at Sedgefield GC in Greensboro, North Carolina, which has hosted this event since 2008.

The course is a Donald Ross design that plays to a par 70 and measures 7,127 yards. The fairways aren’t too tough to hit, meaning whoever can iron the ball close and below the hole is going to have a good shot.

Past form helps here in Greensboro, but as far as styles of players go, Sedgefield has determines all types of winners.

Let’s take a look at who’s in line to pick up a win at the Wyndham.
