Brooks Koepka U.S. Open
SOUTHAMPTON, NY – JUNE 17: Brooks Koepka of the United States kisses the U.S. Open Championship trophy during the trophy presentation after winning the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on June 17, 2018 in Southampton, New York. (Photo by Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images) /

The most impressive performer in majors this season was, by far, Brooks Koepka. He dominated en route to winning both the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. What made his season even more incredible was that he had an injury that caused him to miss the Masters, and he even thought he might never play golf again.

Now he is the first back-to-back U.S. Open champion in 30 years and he is only the fifth player ever to win the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship in the same season.  That puts him in rare company alongside Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods as the only people to accomplish that feat.

At Shinnecock Hills, Koepka had to grind out a victory to win the U.S. Open at +1 a much higher score than the previous year when he won at 16 under par. In his PGA Championship victory, he had to fend off a late charge from his childhood idol Tiger Woods and never flinched.

These two spectacular performances were Koepka’s only two wins of the season, but since they were majors he has to be taken seriously as one of the top young stars in golf.
