Francesco Molinari kicked back and relaxed last week and missed the cut at the Northern Trust, yet he’s still 14th in the FedEx Cup points race. A major championship can really go a long way.

The Open Champion/Quicken Loans National champion finally showed a chink in his armor when he missed the weekend at Ridgewood, his first missed cut since May. In that span he finished no worse than T39 and added a runner up at the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship and a T6 at the PGA Championship.

The Italian is playing the golf of his life and has been virtually mistake free along the way. Molinari has been a fairways and greens machine as demonstrated by his second rank in strokes gained tee to green. He’s also been deft at avoiding the big number and is 45th in SG around the green.

Molinari is also 21st in par 4 birdie or better percentage.

If his proximity is dialed in and he doesn’t leave too many testers on the greens, Molinari should be able to get back on track and have a leg up energy wise on the rest of the field.
