Cantlay tied for 20th in his Tour Championship debut last year, salvaging the week after an opening 74. He made it back this year on the strength of a regular season featuring a win and four more top-10s. In the playoffs, the former world No. 1 amateur has finished T8-T24-T55.

That’s not a trend that typically bodes well for a FedEx Cup hopeful, and perhaps the end of a long, long season is finally catching up with him.

He’s hit the ball well this season, coming in at fourth in strokes gained tee to green.

Cantlay is 151st in strokes gained putting, though, and lost strokes to the field each round at East Lake last year. Another year on these greens will help, but unless his irons are locked in, I don’t see him rolling enough in to hoist the trophy this week.
