This is Sergio Garcia’s Portugal Masters debut. Methinks captain Thomas Bjorn and company may have nudged the Spaniard to tee it up this week as a warm-up.

Garcia was named a captain’s pick recently and could do well to post a big week in his neighboring country.

He hasn’t recorded a top-five worldwide since he finished solo fourth at the Valspar Championship. He did win earlier in the year at the Singapore Open and has five top-10s in just 18 starts in 2018.

Garcia’s last start netted a T24 at the Wyndham Championship where he contended through 54 holes. He’s since taken four weeks off after failing to qualify for the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Prior to that, he posted a T12 at the BMW International Open and a T8 at the Open de France, a Rolex Series event.

Without any course history or elite recent form to rely on, this is a bit of a risky pick, but there’s rationale to believe one of the more talented players in the field is motivated to turn it around in a hurry.
