Ryder Cup: Breaking down each member of Team USA
Phil is easily the most senior and experienced member on the U.S. Ryder Cup squad. At 48, he finds himself six years older than any of the participants on either side. He’s even the same age as former teammate and current coach, Jim Furyk.
Mickelson has been pretty consistent, regardless of which match he gets put into. He doesn’t stand out in any, being even in four-ball and singles, while only being two below .500 in foursome play.
Although he has a losing record, Phil has done well recently. Throughout the three styles of play, he is 7-3-1. Look for Furyk to take advantage of Phil’s recent success, and pair that with his experience, matching him with younger players. It’s unlikely he will see four matches like he did in 2016. With seven players in their 20’s look for the youth to be the ones in four to five matches.
As Phil ages, he hasn’t shown too many signs of slowing down. He’s gone from a oft-attacking player, to a skilled tactician on the course. Expect to see Phil spending a fair amount of time talking to Jim Furyk. He’s likely going to be coaching most of these guys at a future Ryder Cup.
