No one was closer to making the Ryder Cup on the European World points than Matthew Fitzpatrick. He finished in ninth place on the list only one spot out of automatic qualifying.

That made him one of the leading candidates for one of the final four coach picks based on that standing alone, and Fitzpatrick played solid golf all season long to go along with it. He had three top ten finishes and his victory at the Omega European Masters that took place right after the European picks were announced. That win made him the first player since Seve Ballesteros to claim two European Masters Championships in a row.

However his best finish in a major this season was a top twelve finish at the U.S. Open. Ironically the pride of England disappointed in the Open Championship and missed the cut and he also missed the cut in the last major of the year at the PGA Championship. His struggle to contend in the bigger tournaments on the PGA Tour is what possibly could have left him off the Euro squad.

Fitzpatrick also does not have a ton of Ryder cup experience, but he did play in the event in 2016 as one of the youngest competitors ever at 22 years old. He could certainly handle the stage now because he is a much more experienced golfer at this stage in his career.

Last time around, he did not win either of his two matches in 2016 at Hazeltine and that could have been another factor played into the decision to leave him off the team. The European side was relatively young and inexperienced when they got blown out in the last Ryder Cup, so maybe that is why Bjorn decided to go in another direction and leave a young up and comer like Fitzpatrick off the roster.
