Shriners Hospitals for Children Open: Power ranking the top 10 at TPC Summerlin
Poor Tony Finau. He’s facing a Brooks Koepka-light conundrum of universally being regarded as a top player but lacking the wins to back it up.
He led by four shots Sunday at the WGC-HSBC Champions before losing out to Xander Schauffele in a playoff. That makes four runner-up finishes since 2017.
Combine the global trek back to the U.S. and the disappointment of the near-miss, and I can see why many tab Finau as a stay away this week.
Still, he’s got a good head on his shoulders, is traveling east to west back to the U.S. (it’s easier to gain time than lose it, obviously) and is returning to a site of past success.
Finau has played the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open every year since 2014. His results in order are T7-T16-T41-T16.
He’s 37-under in 16 rounds with three 65s and 11 rounds in the 60s.
Finau is a Utahan, so this is about as close to a home game as it gets. He’s not the type of putter to normally finish atop the field in that category, but he’ll stack up enough birdie tries to make up for it.
