Jordan Spieth teed it up last week for the first time in an individual event since the BMW Championship. His performance at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open started off strong with rounds of 66-68 but on a relatively easy course, 71-72 on the weekend resulted in a T55.

"“…the game, I thought that although I didn’t — my result wasn’t fantastic, this was progressively better through the bag,” Spieth said Sunday. “I’m in a new driver and 3-wood that aren’t spinning at all, so I’m going to go back to my old stuff next week until I find one that’s optimized.”"

It’s not great that Spieth is forced to keep swapping equipment in and out, but when you hit fewer than half your fairways as he did last week perhaps it’s time for a change.

He did finish the week above average on the greens, largely due to gaining four strokes on the field between the first two rounds. Spieth also hit 73.6 percent of greens in regulation, which is a good sign that his iron play is still rolling.

This week will be Spieth’s Mayakoba debut. Some are wondering if he’s playing the Shriners and the Mayakoba as penance for coming up short of playing the Tour’s minimum number of events last season.

Whatever the reason, this is Spieth’s best chance to grab a win before 2019.

He’s made six cuts in a row entering this week and last missed the weekend in a regular Tour event in May.

A short course should shield him from hitting too many drivers. Spieth was also third on Tour in proximity from 125-150 yards.
