J.J. Spaun might not be the first name to come to mind for many fantasy golf players, but that would only serve to help you in this week’s contest at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Considering the reality that lesser-owned, higher-performing players are the ones who make the biggest difference in any weekly tournament, picking the “underdog” that steps up can help you bring home the money.

The 28-year-old former San Diego State Aztec just put together a great week at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, shooting four sub-70 rounds to share 15th place. Spaun ranks 12th this season in strokes gained on approach, and he led the field at TPC Summerlin in that same metric.

Spaun hits a decent amount of fairways, even though he’s not the most powerful driver on TOUR. Considering Camaleon’s punitive rough, that’s an important skill to have, and one that he’s used to his advantage before.

Spaun finished in a six-way tie for 14th here last year, but he was just a stroke out of a share of ninth. That was part of a strong sophomore campaign on his part, and he’s already setting himself up for an even better run in 2018-19. Get in on the Spaun wagon this week while he’s still available at the bargain basement price of just $7,500 on DraftKings.
