RSM Classic: Power ranking the top ten at Sea Island
The last full-field event on the PGA Tour until January is this week’s RSM Classic in St. Simons Island, Georgia
From Asia, to Vegas, to Mexico and now Georgia, the PGA Tour’s zig-zag around the world is about to come to a halt. This week brings us the RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. It’s the last FedEx Cup event until the Tournament of Champions in January.
There isn’t much star power to speak of in this week’s 156-player field. A lot of the bigger names kept busy in Asia last month for a slew of guaranteed money events, so it’s hard to blame them for wanting a quieter November.
The RSM Classic is a two-course event with the Seaside and Plantation courses splitting the load on Thursday and Friday and Seaside taking over for the weekend.
Both measure just over 7,000 yards. Seaside is a par-70 and Plantation par-72. They’re not terribly difficult tests, especially for those who hit a lot of fairways.
Since this event began in 2010 as the McGladrey Classic, the winning score has been 14-under or lower each year.
Many holes will force players to club down off the tee, making this very much a second-shot course. A lot of greens are elevated and will send off imprecise shots, so strokes gained approach and around the green are important.
Plodders have a great shot to win this week. Putting is also important around here and those who are good on Bermuda greens are worth an extra look this week.
Temperatures project in the 60s for highs with possible early tournament rain. Wind is one of the course’s best defenses so keep an eye out to see how things are looking when the tournament draws closer.
