PGA TOUR: Ranking the top 5 comebacks of 2018
By Jordan Perez
Arguably one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, Tiger’s 80th PGA Tour win at the 2018 Tour Championship tops this year’s comebacks on the tour. It was a slow yet steady ascension throughout the course of the 2017-2018 season.
First, it was a runner-up finish at Valspar Championship. Then, it was a 6-under chase in the final round of the PGA Championship that was two strokes short of catching up to Brooks Koepka. But what seemed like the impossible dream became a reality in the PGA Tour season finale. Shooting 65 in both the first and third round of the Tour Championship allowed Tiger to claim his first PGA Tour title in over five years, despite shooting 71 in the final round.
Four back surgeries and many attempts at a full PGA Tour season led sports fans everywhere to wonder if he’d ever come close to entering the winner’s circle again. Recounting his painful battle with injury, Tiger told ESPN’s Marty Smith, “There were some days where you’d help me, and I couldn’t stand up. I’d have to just fall to the floor or just stay in bed.”
Maybe Tiger didn’t claim the FedEx Cup trophy, a major or “The Match”, but his win at East Lake reminded everyone of who he truly is on the golf course. The expectations certainly remain high for the golfer who formerly spent 281 consecutive weeks as the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer, who currently fills the No. 13 slot in the Official World Golf Ranking.
