PGA TOUR: Ranking the 25 most dominant performances of 2018
By Bill Felber
No. 10. Rory McIlroy, Palmer, -2.85
No. 9: Aaron Wise, Byron Nelson, -2.95
No. 8: Austin Cook, RSM, -2.96
The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill featured a strong field that included Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose and Bryson DeChambeau all in Sunday contention. Against that talent battalion, McIlroy posted a Sunday 64 to beat DeChambeau by three strokes and third-round leader Stenson by five.
McIlroy did it by running through the final 13 holes in 8 under par; the victory was his first in two seasons.
Aaron Wise made his tour name by shooting a Sunday 65 to break a tie with Marc Leishman and win by three. To claim his first PGA Tour victory, he had to survive a sleepless Saturday night and a four-hour weather delay.
Austin Cook came to the fall swing hoping to make a name, having made just 10 career starts. He succeeded in tournament-winning fashion. At the RSM Classic, he shot a 62 on Friday to jump into a lead he never relinquished, ultimately winning by four strokes. The field that week averaged 274, but Cook needed only 261 strokes. The key was his short game. Cook was generally a decent but not great putter. At the RSM, though, he registered 1.126 Strokes Gained Putting.
