PGA TOUR: Ranking the 25 most dominant performances of 2018
By Bill Felber
No. 4: Dustin Johnson, FedEx St. Jude, -3.36
No. 3: Justin Rose, Colonial, -3.42
Johnson’s performance at the FedEx St. Jude set him up as a favorite entering the following week’s U.S. Open, a tournament in which he eventually finished third to Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood.
Nobody was catching Johnson in Memphis, though. Tied with Andrew Putnam for the lead entering final round play, he fired a 72 to win in a walk. Johnson’s 261 was not only six better than Putnam, it beat third place finisher J.B. Holmes by 10. In fact, there was a larger margin between Holmes in third and six players tied for 45th place than there was between Johnson and Holmes. Johnson finished 17 strokes better than the field average.
Justin Rose won the pulsating three-way race with Koepka and Grillo at Colonial. On Friday and again on Sunday, he shot matching 64s, backing those rounds up with 66 on Thursday and Saturday. He beat the field average by 15 strokes.
Rose had a chance to match the tournament scoring record until he bogeyed the 72nd hole.
It was Rose’s second victory of the season; he also beat Kopeka, Stenson and Johnson at the WGC-HSBC the previous autumn, by two strokes in that event.
