Querencia

Querencia is the only course on my list that doesn’t feature oceanside holes. This Fazio layout tucked up in the rising hills near San Jose del Cabo, is defined by deep arroyos and gorges. Each hole is an island unto itself with disaster both left and right.

An errant shot to either side is gone. Just … gone. The fairways are generous, but Fazio makes sure that the view from the tee box is terrifying. Wide landing zones are obscured with hillocks, bunkers, and elevation changes that make every tee shot a bit nervy.

The greens are huge and fast. Some holes can accommodate a pin placement on Saturday that is 50 yards away from the placement on Friday. There aren’t many places where you need a rangefinder on a putting green, but Querencia is one of them. Lag putting comes at a premium at Querencia. Prepare to three-putt … a lot.

The 18th, an uphill par-4 beast, makes you feel like you’ve survived, more than played Querencia. Despite the lack of ocean holes, there are amazing long distance views of the Sea of Cortez and San Jose.

And there is wind. While not as pronounced as Diamante or Quivira, Querencia is a challenge for everyone.
