Palmilla

I don’t know why I have such a soft spot for Palmilla. It’s not particularly memorable. It has some pretty holes, but few among the 27-hole layout are spectacular. But Palmilla just feels like the definition of Cabo golf. Ocean views, arroyos, big waste areas, elevation changes, it has all the hallmarks of the distinctive environment that can only be found in that part of the world.

With three different 9-hole courses, you can mix and match for a different 18 all week. It’s set among the “old school” Cabo residential area of the same name that features white Spanish-style houses with adobe-colored tile roofs.

Palmilla is like your favorite old country club course that may not be keeping up with the ritzy new clubs but has personality and character that some of the new tracks are missing. It’s like your favorite beach bar: always unpretentious and fun.

This list could have easily included other courses like El Cardonal, a Tiger Woods design, Puerto Los Cabos, and El Dorado. All are worthy of a round. Chileno Bay is also a spectacular course in the heart of the corridor.

So while sunning yourself, landing a marlin, and Spring Break are still Cabo’s most enduring activities, golf is catching up quickly. Next time you’re looking for a casual vacation in the sun, don’t sleep on Cabo. And make sure to take your sticks, too. You won’t be disappointed.
