Farmers Insurance Open: Power ranking the top 10 at Torrey Pines
Jon Rahm made his Farmers Insurance Open debut in style when he drained a 61-foot eagle on the 18th to complete his back nine comeback to win by three after trailing by three to begin the day.
The Spaniard defended his title reasonably well with a T29, though it could have been much better if not for an uncharacteristic 75-77 weekend.
The 24-year-old just picked up his fourth worldwide top 10 since mid-November. It started with a T4 at the DP World Tour Championship, then a four-shot win at the Hero World Challenge, a T8 at the Tournament of Champions and a solo sixth at the Desert Classic last week where he shot 66-66-68-67.
He’s encouraged coming to a site of past success.
“What’s working is tee to green which is something that you really need at Torrey Pines, so hopefully I got another good week coming up,” Rahm said on Sunday.
Rahm wasn’t lying. He averaged 304.4 yards off the tee, hit 67.86 percent of his fairways and 80.56 percent of greens in regulation.
Last season, Rahm was eighth on Tour was 10th in approaches from 200-plus yards and 24th in par-5 scoring. A winning score in the low-double digits under par is usually all you need to win around Torrey Pines. If he can take care of business on each course’s four par-5s, he doesn’t have to be a hero elsewhere.
