If you’ve already grown tired of the new batch of Rickie Fowler Farmers Insurance commercials, I have some bad news: We’re going to be seeing a lot more of them this week.

Rickie Fowler grew up just an hour north of La Jolla, so he’ll be more of a fan favorite than most weeks. And that’s saying quite a bit.

“It’s an incredible piece of property,” Fowler said before the 2016 tournament. “This piece of property with Torrey South and then having the North as a second, I mean this is one of my favorite places on earth.”

Early in his career, Fowler was posting results you’d expect from him and his local knowledge. The 30-year-old’s played this event every year since 2010. He resulted began with T5-T20-T13-T6 before reverting to MC-T61-MC-MC-MC.

Very bizarre! My hunch is that playing in Abu Dhabi the week prior from 2015-17 was burning the candle at both ends a little too much, especially with all the sponsors obligations to contend with at the Farmers.

As with so many aspects of Rickie’s life and career, he’s matured. He’s since wisened up to come into the week rested. While he didn’t play the weekend last year, two rounds of even-par 72 to miss the cut by one was nothing to fret about it.

Plus, Fowler finished 2018 in pretty good form with seven straight top-20s including four top-10s in the last five.
