Would you have guessed San Diegan Xander Schauffele has gone MC-MC-MC at the Farmers Insurance Open? Me neither.

I can understand feeling the pressure of playing in your hometown while in your 20s. Schauffele seems like a quiet, humble guy who maybe would rather be out on his own.

Still, he knows Torrey Pines as well as any and has been playing too well to pass up in my top 10.

“I consider myself a pretty good driver of the golf ball but I’ve never driven it well here and if you can’t do that, you’re never going to play well,” Schauffele was quoted by Fox 5 in San Diego.

After five starts in 2018-19, Schauffele is 12th in strokes gained off the tee and has been in the top 60 each year on Tour. His short game has also looked a bit sharper of late and he’s first this season in strokes gained tee to green.

The 25-year-old San Diego State University product is at a career high sixth in the world after claiming his fourth PGA Tour win at the Tournament of Champions.

He’s the king of the limited field events, as he also won the WGC-HSBC Champions in October and the 2017 Tour Championships. Schauffele’s full field win came at the 2017 Greenbrier Classic.
