Rickie Fowler might head the short list of players due to win their first Waste Management Phoenix Open.

He’s finished runner up twice (2010, 2016) and six top-30s, including three top-10s, in 10 starts.

Fowler finished T11 last year (66-66-67-73) and was in contention through 54 holes before taking a step back.

“I love this place. The course and I most of the time we get along well,” Fowler said in 2018. “(Saturday) I stepped up and played well coming in. And today it wasn’t really anything much different, just didn’t make anything, had a couple bad breaks in a way.”

Fowler had a disappointing T66 last week at the Farmers Insurance Open but some slack can be granted considering it was his first start of 2019. He looked good to end 2018 as he tallied seven consecutive top-20s and 12 in his last 13 going back to last spring. He couldn’t eek out a win but did manage three top-fives including solo second at the Masters.

The 30-year-old has built a reputation for being a well-rounded player. He was 55th or better in each of the main strokes gained categories last season including 21st in approaching the green.

He’s not the same daredevil he used to be as a young player, but he still knows how to pick his spots as demonstrated by ranking 17th in birdies made. Fowler was also 24th in par-5 scoring.

Fowler is the 12th best performer on Bermuda since 2014.
