Paul Casey played the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last year for the first time since 2002. It didn’t look that way.

The Englishman recorded a tie for eighth place a year ago, when he shot 67-70-70-70 with bookending rounds at Pebble. He gave himself plenty of chances as his stats on this course showed 76.39 percent greens in regulation and 72.73 percent of fairways hit. That’s a strong formula for success pretty much anywhere in the world, and it could easily carry over this week.

Moving to the present, the 41-year-old enters the week as one of the last guys on Tour to be making his 2019 debut. Well-rested and confident, he looks to make a big splash in the FedEx Cup rankings fresh out of the gates.

He ended 2018 having made four top-20s in a row, and five if you discount a withdrawal at the BMW Championship, which still didn’t keep him from joining the 30 at East Lake for the Tour Championship.

Casey was one of the best ball strikers out there last season, checking in at 11th in strokes gained approach. He was particularly good with his long irons (second in proximity from 200-225 yards) and should be able to handle the par-5s. Casey was 24th in par-5 scoring and ninth in making birdie or better when going for the green under regulation.
