Phil Mickelson will be making his 22nd start at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 25th at Pebble Beach overall (1992, 2000, 2010 U.S. Open). He’s a three-time winner at the Pro-Am in 2005, 2007 and 2012.

“It just feels great to win this tournament.  It feels great, because it’s a special place for me, Pebble Beach,” Mickelson said after his win in 2012. “My grandfather having caddied here, such a national treasure, it means a lot to me.”

Mickelson’s from the San Diego area, but he’ll still have plenty of backing on the Monterey Peninsula.

Along with his wins, Phil has six additional top-10s including solo second in 2016 and T2 in 2018.

Mickelson is coming off of a missed cut last week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open (an event he usually plays well at). In his previous start, though, Mickelson was oh so close to winning at age 48 when he took T2 at the Desert Classic. He showed he can still go low in reaching 25-under.

This is a busy stretch of golf for Lefty, but it’s at the beginning of it and with plenty of rest (skipping Torrey Pines, followed by a missed cut in Phoenix), fatigue shouldn’t be a factor.

Mickelson had a tough driving week in Arizona but should benefit from more generous fairways and more irons off tees.

He was 14th last season in approaches from 125-150 yards and 10th from 150-175. He was also 13th in strokes gained putting and should have a grasp on these poa annua greens.
