WGC-Mexico: Top 10 power rankings at Club de Chapultepec
It was a disappointing Sunday for Justin Thomas, who led by as much as five shots in the third round and was ahead until the back nine of the final round. Nonetheless, he still finished solo second (66-65-65-75) for his third top-three of 2019 and fourth top-20 in four starts.
JT now comes to the site of another pair of close calls. He finished T5 (69-66-66-72) and three shots back in 2017 and went bonkers on the weekend (72-70-62-64) to catch Phil Mickelson before running out of gas to lose in a two-man playoff.
“At the end of the day I know this is a course that you can kind of go do what I did today,” Thomas said after his Saturday 62. “It can be difficult, but not much wind and pretty soft greens, just trying to go out there and give myself as many chances as possible.”
Thomas’ other high finishes are solo third at the Phoenix Open and solo third at the Tournament of Champions.
With 16 measured rounds in the books, Thomas is the Tour leader in overall strokes gained including in approach and tee-to-green. He leads in par-5 scoring (4.29) and is second in par breakers (30.79 percent).
While last week likely took a lot out of him, it was only his second start in the last five weeks. He’ll also know Chapultepec well by now, so his course prep can be trimmed down.
