Tommy Fleetwood has a pretty good track record at Chapultepec. He finished solo second (69-70-66-66) and only behind Dustin Johnson at the 2017 WGC-Mexico and followed up with a T14 (72-71-67-66) in 2018.

The Englishman doesn’t feel too far flung playing this event.

“It is a very European layout. It’s sort of — last year it just reminded us of playing in Italy or some of the courses that we play. And it wasn’t just me that played well last year, there was a lot of Europeans up there, like you say,” Fleetwood said prior to the 2018 WGC-Mexico. “It just does, it just is a bit of a European layout, a bit of an old-school golf course and ones we’re kind of used to playing a little bit. It’s still different, it’s still a long way above sea level and the greens are a bit slope-y than what we’re used to. So there are still differences that we don’t get but just the general feel of when you’re walking down the fairways and seeing the tee shots, it’s tree lined, that is quite a European feel to it.”

Fleetwood has been solid, though not spectacular, to start 2019.

He went T42-T16 in a pair of European Tour events in the UAE. In the last two weeks on the PGA Tour, the 28-year-old finished T45 at Pebble Beach and T28 at Riviera.

This week favors good iron players and Fleetwood fits the mold. He was 32nd last season in GIR and second in par-5 scoring. He can get to this week’s par-5s in two without much problem.
