We’ve said it before and it hasn’t always come to fruition, but it looks like Rory McIlroy is primed to win soon. Augusta’s less than two months away, you know.

McIlroy walked off the 18th at Riviera with a sour taste in his mouth by making a sloppy bogey, but he still managed his third straight top five at the Genesis Open. McIlroy grinded it out in poor weather to fire 63-69-69 in his final three rounds.

Prior, the Northern Irishman posted T4 at the Tournament of Champions and T5 at the Farmers Insurance Open in his other 2019 starts.

“I’m happy enough. I just sort of keep preaching patience, and I didn’t have my best stuff this week,” McIlroy said Sunday. I sort of am struggling to find the middle of the clubface with a lot of iron shots and sort of just plucked my way around. But Riviera, you can do that around here, there’s no hazards, there’s no place to lose a ball. You just sort of pick your points. So I managed my game well this week. I didn’t have it all, but it’s another top-5 and a step in the right direction.”

Rory eschewed the 2018 WGC-Mexico but did finish T7 in 2017 (68-65-70-71) where he was just three off the pace.

It’s not as big of an advantage as it will be coming up for the Florida swing, but McIlroy is first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee. He’s in the positive in all the main strokes gained categories but will need to clean up his wedges to turn these top-fives into wins.
