The grind doesn’t stop for Dustin Johnson. We’re only three weeks into February, but this will be DJ’s sixth start of 2019 in his third country (plus Hawaii).

It’s hard to tell the 34-year-old to slow down when he’s churning out high finishes. He shot 68-61-65-67 to beat a tough field at the Saudi International on the European Tour. That adds to a T9 (66-68-72-72) last week at the Genesis Open and a T4 at the Tournament of Champions. He’s 5-for-5 overall in cuts made this year.

It’s still early, but we’ve seen Johnson improve around the greens. His PGA Tour stats show improvement in strokes gained around the green starting with 160th in 2014-15 to 75th, 65th, 33rd and now fifth. We all know how well he can crush the ball, but if he’s able to clean up his few mistakes, then there’s not much the field can do.

While I’m dubious of DJ running out of gas soon, it’s worth it to keep riding him. He won the 2017 WGC-Mexico (70-66-66-68) and defended his title with a T7 and posting just one stroke higher (69-66-68-69).

“It’s a golf course I like, I’m very comfortable on,” Johnson said before the 2018 WGC-Mexico. “I feel like I’ve got a really good game plan for this place, so I just go out and stick to my game plan and play golf.”

Johnson was fifth in strokes gained approach last season and first in par-5 scoring. He’s also played well on poa greens before, most notably at Pebble Beach.
