Phil Mickelson has been in the news lately, and for differing reasons. Both were golf related, one of them for something he did, and one of them for something about himself.

The first one is classic Phil Mickelson. There are two classic Phil flop shots that come to mind. The first is him hitting it over someone from a couple feet away

The second is him hitting a flop facing away from the hole. There are all kind of videos, some better quality than others. The one i remember was at Muirfield, but it is hard to find a clean video. Here is one of him showing how it is done.

He hit another flop at the Genesis, and it seems like it passed by some people without being seen. It was during the second round, and on his last hole. During his approach shot on 18, Phil Mickelson pulled his shot, and he pulled it bad. So badly, in fact, it hit the cart path and ended up next to the tee by the 10th hole.

In between the 18th green and the 10th tee was something that was a little difficult to get around. There was a huge hospitality grandstand sitting in Phil’s way. Most player’s would take relief, take a drop for line of sight, and continue to play. Instead, Phil relished the challenge. What is a 45 yard uphill flop over a grandstand, blind, during a real tournament? To Phil, it’s an opportunity. He knocked it close, to around 15 feet.

Luckily Phil didn’t hit it to around 25 feet, or else he would have drilled Jordan Spieth. As you can see in the video, Spieth seems flabbergasted by what happened.

Phil ended up missing the putt, but that isn’t what people are going to remember. Instead, they are going to remember another classic short game shot from Lefty.

The other big event surrounding Phil Mickelson that happened in the last week has to do with the new rule of players being able to wear shorts during Pro-Am’s and practice rounds. Lefty took full advantage of that, and gave the world a glorious look at his fantastic calves.

What glory. How can a longtime golfer have the calves of a professional bike rider? Maybe this is the secret to his incredible short game. For any of the older golfers out there looking to keep their distance up, making working the calves is the way to do it.

Phil manages to continue to be in the news, and for great reasons. Although it hasn’t been for winning an event, Phil can seem to do no wrong.
