The PGA Tour heads south to play the WGC Mexico Championship this week. While the likes of Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson will headline this week, don’t forget to keep an eye on some lesser-known players. These ten players might just surprise you.

Viewers of the WGC-Mexico Championship can expect to see a whole lot of unfamiliar faces this week. Players can qualify in any of the following ways, well beyond just the well-known top-50 OWGR requirement:

  • Top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings (one week and two weeks prior to event)
  • Top players from member tours’ money lists or orders of merit (from last complete season)
  • Top 30 PGA Tour FedEx Cup list (also top 10 from one week prior to event)
  • Top 20 European Tour (also top 10 from two weeks prior to event)
  • Top 2 each from Asian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, and Sunshine Tour

Yes, the top two players from the Sunshine Tour get in this week. That’s in South Africa for those unfamiliar. That’s one of the things that the World Golf Championships do really well, that often goes under the radar. Winners on some of the lesser-recognized Tours get a chance to tee it up with the best of the best and really put their game to the test.

Every year it seems that another unknown makes a splash at this event. Let’s not forget Shubhankar Sharma who held the 54 hole lead before a final round 74 that left him tied for 9th.

So without further ado, let’s meet the top 10 players in this week’s field that you’ve never heard of. Come Sunday, this list might just be a little bit shorter.
