WGC Mexico: The Top 10 Players in the Field You’ve Never Heard of
The low man on the totem pole this week is Matthew Millar, a 42 year old Australian golfer who plays on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Millar qualified for the WGC Mexico by finishing second in the order of merit on the PGA Tour of Australasia in 2018.
“Mr. Top 10” as he is known in Australia has recorded 15 top tens over the last three years, but has seen some a rash of success in the last 3 months as he’s recorded four top fives.
Maybe we should be calling him “Mr. Top 5” instead.
Millar has long been a fan favorite in his native Australia for his unique swing and his cheerful attitude.
Matthew won the 2018 Rebel Sports Master in Wainui, New Zealand where the total prize money was A$100,000 and the winner’s purse was A$15,000.
In his lone appearance in a major, in 2011 Millar finished in 63rd place at the British Open at Royal St George’s Golf Club
For context the WGC-Mexico is a non cut event. As long as Matthew avoids injury and signs a correct scorecard, the minimum amount of money he’ll be taking home to Australia is $50,000.
Listen to Matthew’s experience so far in Mexico including getting a police escort from the airport to his hotel (interview starts at 23min):
Here’s to hoping for a big week for Matthew, where simply a made cut would likely be the largest paycheck of his career.
He’s currently listed at 300/1 odds for winning this week
