Some of the more avid golf fans (and those that turn on the Golf Channel early on the weekends) have probably heard of Matt Wallace as he won three times on the European Tour last year and now sits comfortably inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

John Clarke did a wonderful piece on Wallace in the New York Times that is an excellent read.

In it, Wallace admits that he almost quit the game. He sent messages to all of the sports management companies thinking that was the next step in his career. Fortunately for Wallace he didn’t receive a single response.

Among those who didn’t respond to him was his now current manager (and former manager of Rory McIlroy) Andrew “Chubby” Chandler.

Just a short while ago Wallace had his own Roy McAvoy moment and completely lost his swing. His struggles left him playing in tournaments in remote countries such as Kenya and Kazakhstan.

With the help of former European Tour player and first-team all hair Robert Rock, Wallace has had a meteoric rise that has him in serious consideration for the next Ryder Cup.

However, as evidenced by the PGA Tour still not having a profile picture of him on their site he’s still relatively unknown to most fans in the U.S.

Wallace is currently averaging a stout 312.3 yards off of the tee this season so expect to see some massive drives from the Englishman at the Club de Golf Chapultepec.

Don’t be surprised if you see Wallace’s name climbing up the leaderboard this week. He’s currently listed at 80/1 odds of winning this week.
