DeChambeau’s three West Coast Tour performances have displayed the consistency one might expect of a player so committed to the science/technology of the golf swing. None of those three resulted in wins, or for that matter close contentions, but all three have yielded four-round scores that were decidedly better than average.

At the Sentry TOC, DeChambeau shot 278 to finish seventh, although nine strokes behind Schauffele.

One week later at the Sony, he produced four rounds in the 60s, including a Saturday 63, resulting in a  266 that tied for 10th, seven strokes behind Matt Kuchar.

DeChambeau trundled off to the European tour for a couple of tournaments, including a seven-stroke victory at the Dubai Desert Classic. His return to PGA Tour play at the Genesis resulted in a tie for 15th, eight strokes behind J.B. Holmes.

As befits a mechanic, the most interesting aspect of DeChambeau’s three PGA Tour showings this calendar year has been their consistency. Of his dozen posted scores, only one – a third round 63 at the Sony – has been lower than 67 or higher than 71. He hasn’t produced an over-par round in an official PGA Tour event all season, a streak that now encompasses 23 rounds.
