PGA Tour: The most dominant players of the West Coast Swing
By Bill Felber
Among the seven players who won West Coast Swing events – Xander Schauffele, Kuchar, Adam Long, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson and J.B. Holmes – only Kuchar and Schauffele showed the consistent staying power required to make the Swing-long top 10.
Kuchar’s least consistent moments all occurred off the course, in his well-publicized financial run-in with a former caddie. That matter appears to be settled.
At work, he was solid, that Sony victory accompanied by three other top 25s. Save for a closing 75, Kuchar might have added the Waste Management title to his resume. He trailed Fowler by four shots entering the final round of play, a round in which Fowler indulged the field by posting a 74.
But in bad weather conditions, Kuchar was among those failing to take advantage. He went Fowler one worse, turning in a 75 that knocked Kuchar back to a tie for fourth, five strokes behind.
Kuchar spent most of the rest of the Swing hanging around the top 20. He tied for 19th at the Sentry TOC, tied for 22nd at the AT&T, and tied for 28th at the Genesis.
Only in that tie for 19th at the TOC did he fail to better the four-round field average.
