Top 10: Favorite Golf Slang
The Hockey Stick, The Snowman & El Ocho
A Hockey Stick is a 7.
“My card has more hockey sticks than the Boston Bruins locker room.”
Could quite manage a hockey stick? Well, at one shot worse, a Snowman is an 8.
“Call me Frosty. I got a Snowman.”
El Ocho is also a good substitute for an 8. It sounds like a serial killer nickname. “This is the 24th victim of El Ocho found along the Arizona border.” El Ocho will also kill your card. Golf score or serial killer, you don’t want any part of El Ocho.
Mississippi Rattler (Snake game)
If you play the game Snakes you may have some version of this term already in use.
A snake is a 3-putt. After the round, you add up all the snakes in your group and the person who made the last one is said to be “Holding the bag of snakes”. He pays the other three guys based on the number of total snakes in the bag.
A snake is obviously a reference to a long and serpentine putt. A Mississippi Rattler is the worst variety. It’s a putt so long and deadly it virtually guarantees a 3-putt.
“Looks like you got your hands on a Mississippi Rattler. Good luck with that. Be careful.”
If you aren’t laughing during a round of golf, you might be doing it wrong. So here’s to avoiding the Mississippi Rattlers, staying out of The Gunge, and eluding the killer El Ocho. Do this and you’ll probably have a good round and a couple of chuckles.
