Tiger Woods makes brutal quad on No. 17 at THE PLAYERS
Tiger Woods got off to a hot start in the second round of THE PLAYERS Championship, but even he isn’t invincible when it comes to the infamous island green on No. 17.
Tiger Woods made a lot of noise on the back nine of TPC Sawgrass in the opening round of THE PLAYERS Championship on Thursday. Surviving the tougher weather conditions on Thursday was important, and he sounded confident that he’d be able to take advantage of an earlier tee time on Friday. And that’s exactly what he did…right until he got to No. 17.
The infamous island hole on the Pete Dye classic is, on its face, a relatively straightforward par-3. Ask most Tour-level pros, and they’ll tell you the same thing: the green is big enough to just aim for the middle, make your par and move on with your day. But when it comes to THE PLAYERS Championship, players have a habit of taking dead aim and letting it fly.
That can lead to some amazing outcomes, of course. See Sergio’s ace in 2017, or Ryan Moore’s dunk off the pin yesterday. But when those brave attempts go just a little bit off target…well, some terrible things can happen, too. Such was the case for the 14-time major champion and two-time winner at Sawgrass on Friday.
If you’re a Tiger Woods fan, what you’re about to see is not easy to watch. That being said, the 17th is sort of like the U.S. Open in miniature, where you’re almost hoping for the wreck as much as you are the triumph.
Woods had reached 5-under for the tournament after opening with birdies on three of his first seven holes, including a pair of back-to-back birds on Nos. 12 and 13. He was within two strokes of the lead and looked ready to make a charge, before this disaster put that to a sudden, painful halt.
At the time of this writing, Woods is still 2-under for the round, with a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole (his 11th hole today, teeing off on No. 10). He’s tied for 49th place, well within the cut line but with a ton of ground to make up if he intends to make a move this weekend. We’ve seen crazier things from Tiger over the years, but this one is going to be tough to bounce back from. His best chance at winning THE PLAYERS Championship may have just slipped through his fingers.
