The Tampa area welcomes DJ to town for the first time in nearly a decade. He missed the cut at Innisbrook in his lone appearance in 2010. A lot’s changed since then.

Johnson is world No. 1 and won 17 of his 20 career PGA Tour victories since his trunk slam here in 2010.

The 34-year-old has two worldwide wins in 2019 at the Saudi International on the European Tour and the WGC-Mexico.

Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff he still grinds out rounds in the 60s. That’s what he did en route to a fairly quiet T5 last week at the Players (69-68-69-69).

He hit it as well as anyone by hitting 76.39 percent greens and averaging over 306.8 yards off the tee. Johnson has never putted well at Sawgrass and picked up his first top-10 at this event, so a change of scenery this week could do him some good.

DJ has made his last nine worldwide cuts dating back to the Open Championship. He hasn’t missed a weekend in the States since the 2017 U.S. Open.

He ranks second on Tour in strokes gained overall only behind Rory McIlroy. Johnson’s 22nd or better in all the main SG categories including fourth tee to green. He’s 12th in GIR and is continuing to improve over the years with the putter.

Johnson’s progression the last three season in SG putting is 81st, 25th and now 16th.
