Valspar Championship: Power ranking the top 10 at Innisbrook
Good luck trying to figure out Jason Day’s true health status these days. Oft maligned for his myriad of injuries, many of which he bounces back from quickly, the Aussie did it again last week at the Players Championship.
He withdrew Thursday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational citing a back injury, which has plagued him in the past.
According to Golf Channel, Day drove to West Palm Beach to receive cortisone injections around his spine.
“Obviously I know how much it hurt last week, but then given the injections and the cortisone and all that stuff that went in there, I know that we have hit the spot because I can’t feel a thing, which is good,” Day said during the Players. “I don’t want to be out there playing golf and knowing that it hurts.”
The 31-year-old fired 70-66-68-72 to get in the hunt at TPC Sawgrass where he finished T8. Day hit 72.22 percent of his greens and gained over a stroke per round on the greens.
Day leads the Tour in strokes gained putting. He’s also fifth in strokes gained of the tee.
He seeks his first win since the Wells Fargo Championship last May. Since then he has six top-10s including three in 2019. He took T5 at Torrey Pines and T4 at Pebble Beach.
Day’s played five times at the Valspar and none since 2013. He’s made four cuts and was T20 in 2012.
