Bryson DeChambeau isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo in the golf world, and he’s been wildly successful doing it. But that still ruffles a few feathers, with Brendon Todd calling the analytical pro a “nut” in a recent Twitter post.

Bryson DeChambeau has been called a lot of things as he’s made his mark on the PGA TOUR. The big one is the “Mad Scientist” moniker. “The Professor” is another. He plays the most analytical game possibly ever. He’s used a protractor on the course, and he talks about perfecting his “biomechanics”. He also has all of his irons famously cut to 7-iron length, and while that works magnificently for him, it isn’t for everyone.

One player it really isn’t for, apparently, is Brendon Todd. The 33-year-old journeyman is best known for winning the 2014 HP Byron Nelson Championship, with four other pro titles on the developmental tours to his name. A strong run in 2014 brought him inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He made $1.8 million in the 2014-15 season, but he lost his full-time PGA TOUR membership after making just four of 29 cuts the following year.

The difference between Todd’s and DeChambeau’s careers couldn’t be more different – DeChambeau has won five times over the past two-plus seasons – but that didn’t stop Todd from giving his unfiltered opinion when asked a direct question about the Mad Scientist recently on Twitter.

I mean, that’s pretty direct. And while you can’t argue with the validity of Todd’s basis for his comments – players have won a TON of tournaments with standard, varied-length irons – there’s more than a little bit of salt in here. Sure, there’s a lot about DeChambeau’s game that you could call a little nutty, but the guy is winning tournaments his own way. That’s like calling Jim Furyk a hack for his homemade swing, and forgetting about his 17 PGA TOUR victories and a major championship.

Todd might have been simply trolling here, or being pleasantly sarcastic, but he hasn’t made any comments clarifying that. And, Twitter being Twitter, he got righteously roasted in the comments following this statement. The most popular reminder: Todd is currently 1,541st in the Official World Golf Ranking. That’s only 1,535 spots behind DeChambeau. So, you know, there’s that.

Bryson DeChambeau hasn’t hit social media in a couple days, and it’s unlikely he’ll have anything to say about this. After all, his play is doing plenty of the talking for him. This is just part of what comes with playing a different type of golf, and if you ask me, there’s nothing wrong with that.
