WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play: Breaking Down the Groups
Unluckiest Player: Tony Finau
Tony Finau has played consistent golf in the 2018-19 PGA Tour season, with six Top-25 finishes in nine starts. Despite his solid season, he may not survive to the weekend at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship, as he received an unlucky draw in Group 14.
The number two player in this group is Ian Poulter; I could share stats regarding Ian, but any golf fan knows his Ryder Cup reputation. He could miss 100 straight cuts and no one would want to face him in match play.
Rounding out the group is Kevin Kisner and Keith Mitchell, both formidable foes for Finau. Kisner, the former Georgia Bulldog, made the finals of this event last year before bowing out to Bubba Watson. Mitchell is a fantastic driver of the golf ball (currently ranked 9th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee) and had a stunning win at the Honda Classic earlier this month.
To further show how difficult these matches will be for Finau, no one in his group ranks outside the Top 45 in Total Strokes Gained on the PGA Tour this season. Compared to the easy draw Francesco Molinari received, one has to feel that Tony got unlucky with his group.
