Honestly, it’s been a pretty tough year for the 2016 PGA Champion, but his Texas Open resume grants him some amnesty.
We’ll start with the good.
Walker’s played this event every year since the move to the Oaks Course. He finished T3 in 2010 and was a winner in 2015 when he fired 71-67-69-70 (-10) to win by four over Jordan Spieth and six over Billy Horschel in third.
When he wins, he can win big as we saw with a nine-stroke win at the 2015 Sony Open.
Walker at the Texas Open also posted T16 in 2014, T13 in 2017 and 4 in 2018. Last year he fired 71-69-67-67 to best his 2015 score by three, but benign conditions allowed Andrew Landry to take the title.
Now, for some caution.
Walker’s best finish in 2019 is a T44 at the Phoenix Open. He’s made a respectable five of eight cuts, but he’s still having lingering effects from Lyme disease that’s plagued him for the better part of two years.
It’s a tough break, but perhaps the San Antonio area resident from Boerne can summon up some old feels and get back on track.
He ranks 43rd in strokes gained around the green this season. He’s generally been a good putter in his career, so his 182nd SG rank seems due to rise.
