Jordan Spieth showed signs of life last week at the WGC-Match Play. While he failed to advance out of group stage, the 25-year-old nearly fought back to win his final match and went 1-1-1.

”I think if this were a 72-hole event, I have a chance to win based on the way I’ve played the last three days,” Spieth said. ”These are the best players in the world. So saying that, yeah, I feel as good as I have in a while about my game.”

We’ll see if that’s just lip service or not.

Spieth has made three of his five cuts this season led by a T35 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

He’s 29th in birdie average and 81st in strokes gained putting. His ball striking stats have suffered, which is the reverse of last year when he hit the ball at an elite level but couldn’t get the ball in the hole.

Fortunately for him, he’s got good history at TPC San Antonio.

He finished solo 10th in 2014 and solo runner up in his last start here in 2015 where he posted 71-69-71-70. He lost to Jimmy Walker by three but beat the rest of the field by three or more.

Spieth has two green jackets in his closet, but unless he posts a strong week in his home state he’ll be faded next week in Augusta.
