Haotong Li makes his Texas Open debut this week. He’s played in the US plenty before, but he’s not of high enough status to warrant some sponsor’s exemptions on the PGA Tour. The 23-year-old is close to his apex in the world rankings thanks to a win in 2018 and a strong start to 2019.

Li finished second against a talented field at the Saudi International on the European Tour and T12 at the Dubai Desert Classic.

He was also top-20 at the WGC-Mexico and last week won his group at the WGC-Match Play. Li went 2-1 with a win over Brooks Koepka and he defeated Alex Noren in a playoff. His loss in the knockout stage was to eventual champion Kevin Kisner.

While these stats are from earlier in 2019, Li is third on the European Tour in stroke average and fifth in birdies per round (5.2). He’s third in strokes gained off the tee, 22nd in SG tee to green, 24th SG around the green and 62nd in SG putting.

For a player his age he’s very well-rounded. His driver can get crooked sometimes, but as long as he can avoid the woods on No. 9 where Kevin Na made a 16 back in 2011, I think Li will be just fine.
