Masters Tournament: Ranking the 2019 field’s best of the last decade
By Bill Felber
9: Dustin Johnson, -1.91
Dustin Johnson famously missed the 2017 Masters Tournament after falling down a flight of stairs, but otherwise his three most recent Masters appearances have been impressive. They include ties for sixth in 2015, for fourth in 2016 and for 10th last year.
In the 2016 Masters, he entered the final round tied with eventual champion Danny Willett and Jason Day for fourth place behind Jordan Spieth. When Spieth found grief at the 12th hole, it was Willett who took advantage, playing the final six holes in three under par. Johnson was only one stroke behind Willett at the time, but a bogey at the 17th cost him any shot at winning.
Only a missed cut in the 2014 event mars his record or raises any reason for caution.
Since his victory at the 2016 U.S. Open, the golf world has been waiting for Johnson to dominate the game. Although he hasn’t yet picked up that second major title, he has hovered at or just off the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, entering this week No. 2 behind Justin Rose.
He enters the 2019 event having won once this season, at the WGC Mexico. There he beat Rory McIlroy by five strokes, demonstrating that on any given week Johnson’s game has the touch and power to explode on the field.
