A regular at Augusta National since 2010, Kuchar has made four genuine title runs. He tied for third in 2012, tied for eighth in 2013, tied for fifth in 2014, and tied for fourth in 2017.

He’s now 40, raising the question of whether Kuchar’s major game may be nearing the end of his prime. On the other hand, he’s already won twice this season, including a four-stroke victory at January’s Sony Open. He leads the FedEx Cup standings and is second on the official money list, so slippage hasn’t seemed to be a problem to date.

In 2017, Kuchar began the tournament modestly, and was eight strokes behind co-leaders Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose through three rounds. The margin was too great for Kuchar to overcome, but that did not prevent him from showing what he was capable of at Augusta. He played the final 13 holes in six-under par, shooting a personal best 67 and climbing into a tie with Thomas Pieters for fourth.

Kuchar has always shown the capability to go at least somewhat low at Augusta. His 36 competitive rounds there since 2010 include 16 sub-par ones, eight of them in the 60s. He has never turned in a card worse than 75.
