Masters: Most Interesting Players to Watch this Year
Tony Finau
Last year, Tony Finau’s Masters tournament almost ended before it was even able to start. Following a hole-in-one during the 2018 par-3 tournament, Finau took off towards the hole celebrating. As he was turning around and jumping, he came down and dislocated his ankle.
Finau showed how tough he was in multiple ways. Not only did he pop his ankle back into place, he went out and played that week. He played incredibly well too. He ended up T10, shooting rounds of 68-74-73-66. being able to score well Thursday and Sunday on essentially one ankle was an incredible feat on Finau’s part.
Although he hasn’t won a major yet in his career, he was close multiple times last year. First, it was the T10 at The Masters. He followed that up with a fifth place finish at The U.S. Open, and a T9 at The Open.
This year, Finau has embraced last year’s injury, taking part in wearing the joke new Nikes, with the incredibly high ankle support. Playing this tournament healthy, with the confidence of how well he played last year, leads me to being very excited to see how Finau is able to do this year.
