The Masters: DraftKings fantasy golf weekend contest picks
By Hans Geevers
The Masters is at its halfway mark, but that doesn’t mean that fantasy golf is done for the week. Quite the contrary, as there’s a lot of value to be had in weekend-only contests on DraftKings. Here’s our breakdown of some of the best value plays you can find.
As always, Draftkings is providing a number of weekend contests for DFS players. However, the difference for the Masters weekend contests on DraftKings is primarily in the higher prizes being offered. Due to the high interest in DFS golf for the Masters, I thought it was appropriate to provide my DFS picks for weekend golf contests.
Before I get into my picks, I briefly wanted to point out a distinct difference in weekend contests from the classic contests that are offered by DraftKings prior to the first round. In weekend golf contests, how the golfer finishes in the tournament does not provide your lineup points. In the classic contests, how the golfer finishes in the event does score your lineup points and is of course highly important.
Now that I have illustrated the biggest difference in classic and weekend contests let’s move on to what is important in constructing your weekend lineups. In weekend contests, your golfers need to score. Birdies and eagles are essential to your lineups performance. Furthermore, finding golfers that have a tendency to avoid bogeys will help you. Bogeys and double bogeys are not good, obviously.
Augusta National has played significantly shorter than usual over the first two days due to the heat, and greens have played softer, especially on Friday, due to the rainy conditions. That’s expected to carry over a bit this weekend, but the weather will be a bit more fair on Saturday than Sunday. Looking at players who can hang in those circumstances is far more important if that is the case.
65 players made the Masters cut line of top-50, plus anyone within ten strokes of the lead. A few big names are taking an early trip home, including Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Brandt Snedeker and Paul Casey. However, if you’re in a real gambling mood, some guys like Jordan Spieth, who bounced back from an opening 75 to shoot 68 and make the cut comfortably, might be worth a flier.

Tiger Woods (10,000) As of this writing, Tiger Woods is three shots behind the leaders [Editor’s Note: Woods finished the second round at -6, tied for sixth and one off the lead). As I mentioned previously, I want golfers that are looking to score this weekend. I think Tiger may finish his second round several shots back of the lead which will force him to go after more pins this weekend. The result will be Woods having many more scoring opportunities. Additionally, I like the way Mr. Woods has looked this week. It would not shock me if Woods caught fire on the weekend.
Rickie Fowler (9,800) In the 2018 Masters, Fowler played an outstanding final round. Rickie shot a final round 67. In doing so, Rickie narrowly missed finding a way to beat eventual champion Patrick Reed. My point here is that Rickie has the fight to make a significant charge on the weekend of a major championship. His overall play this year has been arguably the best of his career.
Justin Thomas (9,100) Thomas has played the Masters three times prior to 2019. His best finish was 22nd. Thomas reported in a press conference at the 2019 Masters that he believed his strategy in previous years was conservative and safe. Thomas stated that he would be more aggressive this year in an effort to perform better. Thomas has the game to provide many eagle and birdie chances this weekend. His overall talent and his self report about an aggressive strategy this week makes him a lock for my lineups this weekend.
Additional golfers I like this weekend are the following:
Gary Woodland (7,500)
Charley Hoffman (7,700)
Charles Howell III (7,100)
Good luck!
