All the attention is rightfully going to 43-year-old Tiger Woods for turning back the clock. But what Furyk is doing at 48 (49 in May) is remarkable.

His Ryder Cup captaincy took away from his game in 2018 as he had just two top-10s in 14 events prior to Paris. Not long after, Furyk posted a T6 at Mayakoba which was a prelude into 2019.

Furyk opened the year with a T14 at Pebble Beach, posted T9 at the Honda Classic and had the Players Championship in his sights, settling for second.

It was a shame he missed out on the Masters given he’s since recorded a T18 at the Valspar and T23 at the Texas Open.

He’s 6-for-6 in cuts made in 2019 and comes to an event in the RBC Heritage where he’s thrived.

Furyk has teed it up at Harbour Town 18 times and in 10 of the last 11 years. Furyk finished runner up in both 2005 and 2006 and finally got over the hump in 2010 after four previous top-10s. Another top-10 (T8) came in 2012 and he won in 2015.

Both wins came in a playoff despite his 13-under total in 2010 and 18-under in 2015 being two of the best 72-hole scores in recent years. The tournament record is 20-under set by Brian Gay.

A course that demands accuracy is a good fit for Furyk who is 10th on Tour in strokes gained approach

“I think it’s all about working the golf ball. There’s a lot of strategy involved. But you have to be able to control the golf ball,” Furyk said in 2011. “You have to hit high shots, low shots, curve it right to left, left to right. If you don’t have control of the golf ball you’re going to struggle at this golf course. You’re not going to skank it around for very long, and eventually you’re going to be in trouble. It’s about hitting fairways, but a lot of times it’s about hitting the proper side of the fairway.”
