The South Carolina native oddly didn’t play this event at all since MC’ing in 2008 and ‘09, but he made a jaunt back in 2018. DJ finished T16 (69-69-72-67) and looked a little perplexed on the greens where he lost half a shot a round. He hit the ball well, though (62.5% fairways, 72.22% GIR) and will benefit from a year’s experience back at Harbour Town.

A bomber like DJ is handcuffed from busting driver, but he seems to have found some comfort here anyway.

“I like the golf course, yeah. I really do. It actually sets up really well for me,” Johnson said after last year’s event. “I like the golf holes — I don’t really like No. 11 and No. 9, but other than that I like the golf course a lot. I played those holes a total of 5-over this week.”

Johnson climbed back to world No. 1 last week after finishing T2 at the Masters. He hardly seemed to be a factor during the tournament, but he posted one of the better rounds on Sunday (68) to have a chance on the back nine.

The 34-year-old has five top-10s in a row in stroke play events including his win at the WGC-Mexico and a T5 at the Players. He also won this year at the Saudi International on the European Tour and has not finished worse than T45 at Pebble Beach in 2019.

He’s made 11 cuts in a row worldwide.

DJ is top-30 in all strokes gained categories. He’s third in sand saves, which could be a factor as we’ve seen a lot of crucial bunker shots to decide things on 18.

Considering last year’s RBC Heritage start was his first since 2009 and likely lacked in preparation due to it being the week after the Masters, I like DJ to show marked improvement here in 2019 and contend for the title.
