RBC Heritage: Dark Horses to watch out for at Hilton Head
Corey Conners – 80/1
Unfortunately, I’m not clever enough to think of something good and Game of Thrones inspired for this. Instead, I wanted to focus on how well the young Canadian has been playing recently.
It was no joke when at the end of Monday qualifying for The Valero Open on April 1st, that Conners found himself in a 6-way tie for the last spot into The Valero. Not only did Conners get that last spot, but he played lights out at the tournament as well.
Conners became just the fifth person from Monday qualifying to then win the event since 1980, joining Jeff Mitchell (Waste Management Phoenix Open, 1980), Kenny Knox (Honda Classic, 1986), Fred Wadsworth (Southern Open, 1986) and Arjun Atwal (Wyndham Championship, 2010).
After firing off 69-67-66-66 to win the event by two strokes. The win got him into The Masters, where his hot play continued….for the first three days. Heading into Sunday, Conners had fired rounds of 70-71-71. Sitting at -4 is pretty impressive for your second time ever playing Augusta. Conners missed the cut in 2015 after shooting 80-69.
This year, it got to him on Sunday, as he shot 76, finishing the tournament at even, and at T46. His only above par round in the last 10 on the PGA Tour came under arguably the most stressful day in golf for anyone, with early tee times on a Sunday at Augusta.
The RBC Heritage isn’t packed with talent, although there are still some good players there. We all know how nice Canadians are, so i figured i could return the favor by listing my favorite Canadian on Tour as the final one on my list of dark horses. Plus, he graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science, which is a win in my book.
Just kidding, of course i thought of a GoT joke. Long live Corey Connors, The King in The North.
I didn’t say it would be good.
