Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Top 10 power rankings for TPC Louisiana
After Billy Horschel missed the cut with former Florida Gators teammate Matt Every in 2017, he switched to Scott Piercy in 2018.
Smart move.
The duo reached 22-under (65-73-61-67) to win by one over Jason Dufner/Pat Perez.
Horschel went back to the length of putter he used during his 2013 FedEx Cup Playoff run. It paid off big time as he sunk a 29-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole to skirt a playoff and take home the beads.
"“…it was great to play with Scott. Our games match up very well. We are really good ball-strikers and we think the same way. We work with the same stats guy,” Horschel said in 2018. “I don’t have to worry about him making a bad decision or a stupid decision out there because we sort of are in the same mode of the way we’re thinking about how to get around the golf course.”"
Horschel is ranked No. 41 in the world. Despite going winless individually in 2018, he piled up two runner-ups and two-third place finishes.
He’s made seven of eight cuts in 2019 with his best effort being solo eighth at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Horschel won the 2013 Zurich Classic, so he’s comfortable around TPC Louisiana.
Piercy climbed 25 spots up to 85th in the world after contending last week at the RBC Heritage. He shot 67-70-68-69 to finish T3 and just two off the pace. That was his fourth top-20 in nine starts.
He’s familiar with the course having played the Zurich individually seven times highlighted by a T13 in 2012. Last year was his debut in the team format.
